Today, there was a terrorist attack in my favorite city, Brussels. I was a student in Brussels, and I still love to go once per month to this beautiful city. My immediate reaction after the attack was sadness and worry, because I have friends up there. Since I'm an artist, I felt an urgent need to communicate my feelings by a picture.
But what would a picture of a crying little Yannick do to this world? After all, I hate self-pity.
So instead, I decided to launch a counter-trerrorist attack. Not but sending bombs to the troubled areas of this world. But by reminding everybody how much I still love my muslim friends here In Belgium. I mean: Shame on those who did the attack!!! But please... if you start hating the innocent, you make the bad guys win. Because the very nature of terrorism is not conquest, but fear and hate.
There is no reason for me to fear them or to call them "different people": when I sit on the Grand Place in the "Spanish King"-bar, I like observe all these different nations, cultures, etc. On this particular place, I can see hairy metalheads just next to cute japanese schoolgirls, muslim grandpas playing with her grandsons on their bicycles, and everybody making selfies of themselves. Beyond the different skin colours, religions and clothings, there really is no difference between us. Not enough to give us a good reason for killing each other.
Obviously, the terrorists attack's goal is to create anger and hate between the communities, and to separate the muslims from the other groups in my country. I say "No" to this. NO! "No" to murder. "No" to separation. "No" to hate!
A "No" to hate is a "yes " for a better tomorrow!
